About the Workcamp...

The workcamp allows volunteers from the US to unite with volunteers from Vietnam, and together we help educate areas in need of assistance. The team will visit rural areas of Vietnam and provide our insight and experiences of our own lives. Sometimes, it is just our presence that bring hope and encouragement for a better future. The focus of the workcamp is to emphasize the importance of continuing a person's education.

While we are there, we will get to meet with students that have been awarded with Sunflower Mission scholarships. We will go to "School completion" ceremonies and visit with the young children that will be attending our newly built schools. The students are always very excited to greet us and talk with us as many of them have never met anyone from America. We will visit many different areas of Vietnam where Sunflower Mission has a project in progress.

The work camp is not all work, however, volunteers will be able to have free time and explore the beautiful country of Vietnam. The wonderful thing about this workcamp is that you are able to help and make a difference, but also experience the many wonderful things in Vietnam.

To reserve your spot, you must leave a $100 deposit by January 31st, 2008. The dates for the trip have not been determined, but tentatively the trip is planned for the later part of May to mid June. More details will be given at a later date.

Things to know...

This trip will be an adveture. You will travel by foot, bus, boat, ferry, and 'xe ôm'. You may cross money bridges or climb mountains. Expect the unexpected, but most importantly, you will have an experience of a lifetime.

Common Questions...

Who can go?
Anyone who wants to help make a difference can come. We get volunteers from all ages, but keep in mind that minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent of guardian. Space is limited so send in your application soon!

How much does it cost?
In 2007, costs for the trip for each person was roughly $2,000. We have not determined what the 2008 costs will be as of this time, but we hope to keep it similar to the previous years. The trip fee will include airfare, food, hotel, and transportation whil on Sunflower Mission assignments. You are responsible for any personal expenses, such as shopping. Not to worry though, shopping in Vietnam is very cheap! $10 will go a long way!

Where will we stay?
We will be sleeping in straw huts on the floor. This gives a more real life experience. Just kidding! We will be staying in clean, nice hotels. Often, some even have internet connections (not guaranteed) for you to keep in touch with friends and family while on your trip.

What will we be doing?
The first week we will do light labor work (finishing touches) on our school. Light work will consist of painting walls door and windows, stain student desks, grout floor, design and decorate class rooms, and plant trees or set up a playground. During this time we may also interact/play with the students and children from the area. We will then participate in the completion ceremony to give out gifts to the students and hand the school over the local community. The second week we may visit some of the previous Sunflower Mission built schools, attend 1 or 2 more school completion ceremonies, and/or visit and orphanage in the area. The remainder of the time we will explore the beauty of Vietnam and its people. On past trips we have visited Phu Quoc island, Da Lat resort, Nha Trang beaches, and Chau Doc temples.
