Nurturing Roots
by Grace Hoang
Before this work camp, I’ve never stepped foot in Vietnam. It always felt like a figment or speckle of my identity rather than being engraved into me; however, after being able to volunteer here and truly interact with my heritage, I can confidently say that I’m privileged to be such a small cog in an operation as impressive as Sunflower Mission and its role in urging Vietnam towards the future. Albeit, my efforts painting the small corners or shorter parts of a single room in a single school may not physically amount to much, but I can’t help but take pride in that small step forward in the ever growing source of not just education but hope. Each minuscule step I took only multiplied with all the other amazing people I was able to meet and work with throughout this camp. Everyone brought something new and valuable to the table, whether it was brute strength, creative thinking, artistic ability, or even (much needed) comedic relief. The combined efforts, sincerity, liveliness, and silly moments throughout camp have made this experience truly unforgettable and for that, I’m so grateful.
