The Boat Ride

by Quynh Pham

Ah, the unpredictability of the weather! Our team gathered for breakfast at 6:30 am, eagerly anticipating our first day at the work camp. But just as we were enjoying the sunny start, rain began to sprinkle unexpectedly. However, there was no cancellation today!

We loaded onto the bus and headed out to Giong Rieng district. After a 30-minute drive, we reached the river and transitioned into a boat because the road ahead was not wide enough for our buses. Ready to take off, but unable to do so due to something stuck to the propeller. Our resourceful team jumped into action, brainstorming solutions to free the propeller. One of the local work camp team members bravely jumped into the water and helped untangle the obstruction, allowing us to proceed on our way. After 15 minutes of teamwork and determination, we were finally set free. We collectively cheered, “Anh giỏi quá!” 👏👏

Slowly floating down the river on this big hollow boat, it was a quaint, slow, and serene journey, with team members ducking under tree branches and keeping their hands safely inside as we passed other boats.

Arriving at the school site at 9 am, we wasted no time in getting to work. Despite the delay, Team #4 showed great dedication, seamlessly working together with focus and determination. As we poured our hearts into the task at hand, meticulously painting and drawing our wall decals, we forgot all about our water breaks. I’m sure other teams did as well! 🤪

Ready for day 2!
